“Do They Know it´s Christmas Time” foi uma música lançada em 1984, na época natalícia. Envolveu diversos artistas irlandeses e britânicos com objetivo de angariar fundos para a população faminta da Etiópia. Um projeto realizado por Bob Geldof e Midge Ure, titulado “Band Aid Trust”, arrecadou milhões de dólares para a caridade.

A música fala do verdadeiro espírito de Natal, a comunhão para com os outros. Enquanto muitos festejam o Natal, festejam a tradição cristã com família e amigos, quantos estão numa situação menos boa, vivem na pobreza extrema, famintos… Mais exatamente, idosos, mulheres e crianças, “será que eles sabem que é Natal?”.

Daí o projeto referir a comunhão não só com a família, não só com os amigos ou conhecidos, mas também apela à compaixão para com aqueles que estão longe do nosso círculo familiar, que precisam de ajuda, aqueles que nem sequer podem festejar o Natal ou nem sabem que o é.

O regime de Apartheid deixou o Sul africano com péssimas e terríveis condições de vida, mais precisamente durante 46 anos, de 1948 a 1994. Por isso, o projeto “Band Aid Trust” tinha o intuito de ajudar, sendo o primeiro projeto a reunir tantos artistas para essa causa. Foi uma das principais manifestações artísticas a ajudar a população africana.

Mais tarde, este projeto inspirou a realização de outros como “USA for Africa”, que gravou o single “We are the World”, tendo como compositores Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie. O Apartheid acabou oficialmente em 1994, embora, na atualidade, ainda persistam situações de extrema pobreza e desigualdade social.

Em 2014, quando a música “Do they know its christmas time” fez 30 anos, foi criada uma nova versão, contando com o apoio de artistas como Ed Sheeran e a banda One Direction.

Em 2017, a música teve novamente destaque na cena final do filme “Daddy’s Home 2”, que estreou em novembro, tendo como protagonistas Will Ferrell e Mark Wahlberg.
